 One of the pioneers of chair massage, Shoshana Frumkin has a lifelong commitment to bringing health and well-being to the world.
Shoshana got her start in the natural food business in the 1970s before ‘organic’ was a household word. A certified small-scale organic farmer herself, she worked to establish the California Certified Organic Farmers (CCOF) standards that paved the way for state and federal laws that define organic agriculture today. She later joined a worker-owned-and-run natural food store, where she fostered small local growers and helped to launch companies like Odwalla, Veritable Vegetables produce distribution, and Mountain Peoples Warehouse (now United Natural Grocers).
A graduate of the University of California Santa Cruz, Shoshana also trained in nutrition consulting and education at Bauman College, and established a private nutrition practice supporting women in recovery and youth, and offering nutritional training programs like “Play With Your Food” and her popular “Kitchen Talk” program at Elephant Pharmacy.
In the early 1980s, Shoshana wanted to get even more hands-on with health, and became a Certified Massage Practitioner. Soon after, with cosmic perfect timing, the portable massage chair was invented, and she established a first-of-its-kind chair massage practice at a San Francisco holistic health center, and began delivering corporate on-site massage to the Bay Area’s top companies. Next, the first On the Spot Massage drop-in Relaxation Station opened in a Berkeley natural grocery store, and she soon had other practitioners working for her.
Since then, her vision has never wavered… to make getting a healthy and relaxing chair massage a convenient and affordable addition to people’s daily lives; to give chair massage practitioners a reliable and professional location where they can build their practice; and to make a contribution to relaxing the world, one chair massage at a time. |
